Mariana Villarreal, a waitress who works at the Hooters in Roswell, Georgia, demonstrated the most incredible act of kindness, generosity and selflessness recently when she donated a kidney to a customer. Don Thomas was a ten year regular at the restaurant and cut a likeable presence. Staff always enjoyed his company and talked to him. But he never thought he’d struck up such a strong bond with them until the offer came in.
He’d been suffering with kidney problems for some time and his health began to deteriorate after his wife’s death from breast cancer. When Mariana heard about his plight, her suggestion was almost instant. She had lost her grandmother to kidney disease and had been unable to help because she wasn’t a match…
Thomas was absolutely gobsmacked by Mariana’s shocking suggestion.
“She had only been here a short time,” he said. “I just barely knew her when she made the offer.”
Here’s Mariana in her own words, ‘Today is the big day after 2 years of constant doctor visits my favorite hooters guest will finally get a chance at a normal life again. Don’s been going to Roswell Hooters for more than 10 years. He’s a Vietnam war veteran, father of 2, His wife past away from breast cancer and a few years later he got kidney failure.’
‘Thank you all so much for the kind words! It means a lot to me that everyone has taken a second to comment and wish me well! The kidney is a PERFECT match and is working amazingly! As for me my kidney is working like there’s still 2 in there. People say I’m crazy because of the age difference but then again age is just a number, it’s how young your heart is and your desire to live.’
Mariana goes on, ‘around the same time I met him my grandmother was going through something similar but I wasn’t able to help her and it will forever be in my heart. My higher calling maybe wasn’t for my grandma but for a complete stranger. He’s not paying me for a kidney, just to clarify ! He’s just an ordinary person with the desire to live a few more years.’
‘If he can live 2 more years the happiest he’s ever been without having to sit in a room 3 times a week filtering his blood for 8 hours and finally have a full glass of water or finally get to pee again then go ahead take my kidney. I know God will give him way more years to come. All I ask is for prayers and for all of you to be thankful that you’re healthy and alive because some people do have it worst!’ She says.
