A bar in St. Petersburg, Florida, called the Iberian Rooster, came up with a drink called “angel shots” in order to provide a secret code for their patrons. The idea is simple, if for any reason, you need help escaping your date, just order an angel shot and the bartender will come to your aid.
We live in a time when more and more people are meeting online, or through dating apps. The angel shot idea is a great way to provide security. While apps like Tinder and Bumble can be a good thing, they can also lead to unsafe situations. Like if your blind date turns out to be someone other than who he says he is.
But this isn’t just in the United States.
While in England, a poster in the women’s restroom recently went viral on social media with a similar idea. The poster was created by a rape crisis support service and suggests women feeling uncomfortable “ask for Angela” in order to discreetly get help.
Many other bars have followed suit, coming up with their own code words to make their patrons feel more secure.
Angel shots are even more specific as they alert the bartender as to what level of assistance is needed. Order the drink neat, the bartender will walk you to your car. Order it on ice, the bartender will call an Uber to take you home. Order it with lime, and the bartender will call the police.
It’s so amazing to see these establishments thinking creatively and putting their customers’ safety first.
